Wow! This was a pleasant surprise to wake up to this morning. Until a few hours ago, I never even heard of the Battle Over Hokkaido Mod (BOH, for short).

Hokkaido is a large northern Japanese island. Among its towns and cities is Sapporo. The fictitious storyline of BOH takes place during the latter part of the Cold War era. Right across the Sea of Japan, to the west, is the Soviet Union. The Soviets are about to heat up the planet by invading Hokkaido. You, as a rank and file member of Japan's military, the Japanese Self Defense Force (JSDF), are to join the battle to route the invading Ruskies.

There are so many things to like about this mod. First of all, it comes with oodles and oodles of new JSDF addons, including air, armor and a variety of JSDF soldier units and weapons. Second, this mod comes with a sample campaign and three SP missions. Third, the campaign is nicely done, with a lot of local Japanese touches added. For example, the Russians start off their invasion by disabling an NTT (Nippon Telephone & Telegraph) communications center and soldiers are told to ignore a Japanese military law that says you cannot fire until being fired upon. This and much more makes the BOH demo fun and interesting.

Currently, the demo's missions and campaign take place on OFP's standard islands. However, I hope to see the BOH mod team produce its own custom island(s) for final release of this mod. BOH team member Jyotohei has also told me that they would very much like to add Japanese voice acting to the campaign in the future. Some of the addons could use improvement (like the jeep, for example) but overall this is a class act.

All you need to get rolling is OFP: Resistance and the above file download to play. This is still a work-in-progress, so don't be horrified if you get a missing addon error message or other errors. You should still be able to play most everything.
